I can’t reset my Apple Watch because my phone says it cannot connect to it.

After recently updating my Apple Watch (1st gen), I forgot the passcode for it and now I’m locked out. When I go into the Apple Watch settings on my iPhone to reset it, an error message comes up that says, “Could not connect to Apple Watch; Make sure your watch is nearby, powered on, and not in airplane mode”. However, the Apple Watch app is still showing that its paired.

Also, my watch is is completely locked up because there’s an error message on its screen saying, “Wrong Passcode; open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, go to Passcode, then tap Re-enable Passcode Entry t...” and that’s all it will show. However, when I try to follow those instructions another error message pops up that says, “Unlock Apple Watch; Your Apple Watch is currently locked. Please unlock it to continue.” This also means that I can’t get to the power off menu of my watch to reset it from there.

I’ve also tried restarting my Apple Watch and iPhone. I’m afraid to unpair it from my phone to where it’ll be locked forever.

Any other suggestions?
