When I open mail it shows messages in the middle of my inbox not at the top

When I open Mail my new messages are at the top, but Mail opens 1/2 way down the Inbox list. This can be 100 messages down the list. How can I have the list open at the top of the inbox

Its an old but very persistent bug.

When this his happens to me I delete the message or move it to a different folder. It works for a while.

Mail always starts at the top My mail is sorted with the newest emails at the bottom of the list. Yet when Mail starts up, or even if I go back to it after using a different app, the email at the very top is always highlighted. Mail inboxes Since updating to BigSur, Mail does not merge all of my gmail accounts into one Inbox. I have to open all the different Inbox accounts separately. There is no choice in preferences to have all the inboxes open under "all inboxes". Does anyone else have this problem or know if it can be solved? Thank you!
