Question: iTunes update restore

After an auto update to iOS 11.3 iPad asked for password but would not accept it when input. After a number of tries the iPad was disabled without warning.

I found this site:- https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204306?&cid=acs::fm-itunes_HT204306 and followed the instructions, exactly as written, a number of times, but every time I get to step 3 and click on “restore” I get the error message The iPad software update server could not be contacted. You do not have enough access privileges for this operation”.

I am properly logged into iTunes so what does access privileges mean?

Clicking on the “More Info” button took me to https://support.apple.com/en-nz/HT201210 but steps 1 to 6 just produced the same result. I then clicked on “follow the steps for your error code below step 6. I had no error code so the only available option was to reset the hosts file but that didn’t solve the problem.

Anybody got any suggestions as to my next step?
