Overshoot on scale with sequence replicator

I use overshoot with sequence text without any problem. The same steps with sequence replicator don't produce the same results.

I want to ask for advice on how to get overshoot working with sequence replicator.

I have a circle that I replicated.

I set the replicator type to 'geometry'

I have a rounded rectangle as the source for the geometry with 80 points

I apply sequence replicator

I add the scale parameter

I set the sequencing to 'from keyframes'

On the scale parameter to choose from the menu - add parameter behavior - overshoot

I set the start value of the overshoot to -100, like I would with sequence text

These are the same steps I use with overshoot on the scale for sequence text - but the result is no different than just using regular 'from' sequencing with scale set to 0 -

The points just scale in - without the overshoot.

I can see the overshoot figures are all displaying in the editor - and the parameters are running through the numbers as if it is working - but the visual result isn't matching that information.

Am I missing a step here?

I could apply overshoot to the source and replicate that instead, which works normally - but I want to apply overshoot via the sequence replicator instead.

The problem, I think, with Overshoot spread out over the entire project timeline is that it "unfolds" too slowly. Try setting the Overshoot> Ramp Duration to 1%. Might help to bump up the Cycles and Acceleration.

I also added an Overshoot to a Color addition to the Sequence Replicator (applied to Color > Red) from a starting color of blue. (You should see this in high res... there's a lot you can do with this technique!)

I have the Spread parameter set medium high (at 46 for this 10x10 replicator) [and Loops set to 3 to increase the speed of the animation for this GIF).

Notice the "reset" at the end of the sequence. This is a side effect of the Overshoot behavior since it must be unbalanced (start and end values must be different) to work. You can mitigate it somewhat by increasing the timing of the Replicator Cell object (Properties > Timing and set it longer than the project and adjust the End Value of the Overshoot to a negative number — however, I cannot nail down a "formula" for getting it right every time).

Hi Fox_M - thanks for taking the time to give advice on this.

I had been running through every possible combination of ramp, cycles and durations before posting the question. It seems like overshoot is not yet fully compatible with other features yet. I can get close to what I want by choosing to replicate the source with the overshoot applied instead. There is that inconsistency between how overshoot works with sequence text compared to sequence replicator - I had just assumed they would work the same way and so ran into trouble.

With that 'reset' with sequence text and overshoot - whereby the text will be fully visible at the start of an overshoot from -100% - there is a solution. Setting 3 keyframes for opacity - 0 for the first frame - then 100 percent for the second frame - and then another at the end of the duration at 100% will somehow force the text to remain at 0% scale before the overshoot starts - yet again, it doesn't work with sequence replicator. I learned that over in one of the Motion facebook groups - it is dubbed the 'Russian Hackers Secret'.

Thanks for the color tip too, I have lots of uses for that 🙂
