How to keep on-screen keyboard from appearing

I have the Smart Keyboard mated to my ipad pro cleanly and correctly. I’m trying to make documents using Pages, but the Smart Keyboard is unusable. The only options are to use the on-screen keyboard, or the drawing feature appears. This is very frustrating as there isn’t any instruction beyond how to properly mate the ipad with the Smart Keyboard. The help sections are mostly useless.

Hello GatoCaptain2018,

Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. If I understand correctly, you are unable to use the Smart Keyboard when using the Pages app on your iPad Pro. If you haven't already, please Make sure your iPad and Pages app is up to date, as the updates contain stability fixes that can resolve issues like yours, as well as important security updates to keep your iPad safe.

Update the iOS software on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If you're still having this issue, your next step is to force close the Pages app, disconnect your Smart Keyboard and restart your iPad Pro as iOS clears cached data and does other system optimizations when you turn your device off and on. Then reinstall the Pages app and test your issue with the Smart Keyboard again.

Force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Use your Smart Keyboard with iPad Pro

Cheers!
