Force Quit Safari ( command + option + esc keys). Then restart Safari holding the Shift key.
Turn off Safari extensions in Safari > Preferences > Extensions > un-checkmark all extensions.
Empty Caches. You can either choose Safari menu > Clear History Or, if you do not want to remove History go to Safari menu > Preferences > Advanced and check the “Show Develop Menu” in Menubar. Then, on that menu > “Empty Caches”.
See these Apple Support Topics for detailed advice:
If Safari is slow, stops responding, quits unexpectedly, or has other issues - Apple Support
If Safari doesn't load a page or webpage items are missing - Apple Support
Thank you so much macjack for helping me so quickly.
I have done exactly as you suggest and I have had a marginal improvement, but I still am stuck with Safari which when loading up first thing in the morning is operating very slowly indeed. When I have it working it is retaining a reasonable speed.
Thank you again
Tony

Uninstall Clean My Mac as per the developers instructions. No Anti-Virus software or so-called “cleaning” apps are needed or recommended for Mac OS. They can conflict with Mac's own built-in security. At best they will slow your Mac by using unnecessary resources and at worst will bork your entire system. And Clean My Mac is one of the worst.
I don't know if it's causing the problem, but it certainly isn't helping. After that, run another Etrecheck report.
Uninstall CleanMyMac, it's considered malware by many experienced users on these forums. Then restart in Safe Mode and then restart normally and re-test.
If the issue continues, your EtreCheck report does say:
Major Issues:
Anything that appears on this list needs immediate attention.
Hardware failure- Your machine shut down due to a hardware failure.
If the problem persists, take the computer to your local independent Apple Authorized Service Provider and have the computer professionally diagnosed and repaired.
I have attempted to uninstall Clean my Mac

You are going to have to re-install CMM and then following the developers instructions uninstall it. If you don't then you will need to do an Erase and fresh install so you can start over.
No, Clean My Mac is still running.
thank you very much for your help
