Question: Safari can't display a pdf link

I think opening a pdf link has been an ongoing problem with Safari at different times over the years.

What I find is when I do a Google search and then try to open a found link that is a pdf file, I get a black page. I can do this fine in Firefox but not Safari. I'm running maxOS High Sierra 10.13.3 and Safari 11.0.3

iMac, macOS High Sierra (10.13.3)
