"Send to iPhone" option in Apple Maps does nothing

When I select "Send to iPhone" in Apple Maps, I expect either an email, text or notification that the phone has received the directions that I've sent to the phone. Nothing happens.

Does this only work with iCloud; does it only work in wifi with my iMac; why doesn't it do anything?; and why does my phone not receive my directions like I instructed?

Another in a long list of problems with my Apple system.
