Computer stuck on macOS installer

the update notification wouldn’t go away, so I pressed install and now I cannot exit from the screen that says macOS could not be installed. The path/system/installation appears to be missing or damaged. I’ve tried restarting multiple times and it’s not working. I’ve also tried to force quit but nothing will come up

Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart). Run Disk Utility and select First Aid. Then re-install the OS.

If that gets you a working computer, you can try the installation again, perhaps using another admin user account.
