Question: Why will iPad not restore?

I am trying to reset my iPad passcode. I have connected to iTunes using a usb cable. It then says that my iPad must be restored to factory settings. It extracts the software and the iPad goes blank, goes to the apple logo, and starts loading. It then says that the iPad cannot be restored and that an unknown error has occurred. It then says that it cannot connect the device. My computer and iTunes are up to date and I have tried reconnecting the usb, restarting my computer, etc. Any help is appreciated...

What version of iPad Mini do you have? What is the exact version number of iTunes that you have, and please do not say, "the latest", as not all computer OS support the actual latest versions. What computer OS are you using?
