How can I get the subwoofer to activate. I have made sure I am on correct speaker set up. It works when I watch movies through another device. The issue lies somewhere between my apple TV and Denon.
Neither Netflix or amazon prime work.

Does this happen only with Netflix and Amazon Prime Video? Do Apple iTunes Movies (e.g. Last Jedi trailer) output to your LFE channel? (Amazon Prime Video does light up the 5.1 leds on my receiver.)
Could it be that your Apple TV is set to down mix to stereo? Do verify your audio settings in Settings > Video and Audio > [Audio] Surround Sound >
There’s a “Surround Speaker Check” app in the tvOS App Store, that will demo each speaker. The 5.1 test doesn’t require IAP.
You can also use a test mp4 file in your iTunes Library to test similarly.
