Macbook pro overheating charger.

Hi everyone, I have a problem.

Today I noticed my macbook pro, which was connected to a magsafe charger, wasn't charging.

I went to remove the charger and plug it back in, but it was so hot at the connector it burnt my finger.

I used the cable to remove it so not to burn myself more, and unplugged it from the wall.

The charger is fairly new after my old one failed. I checked there was nothing causing a short in the actual macbook connection part, and couldn't see anything.

Any ideas what is best to do? I don't want to buy another charger if it is just going to happen again, but will be lost without my laptop.

It is a macbook pro 13 inch mid 2010 model.

Thank you for your help.

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2010), OS X Mavericks (10.9.2), null

Thanks, I will try that.

I have reset the SMC a few times in the past for other issues, I didn't realise a charger overheating like that could be solved with a SMC reset.

Any idea what actually causes it to happen? It was quite a shock to be burnt by the charger.
