Question: moving photos library and related things

Hello

I have a new MBP. Currently my photos library is on an external usb connected drive, its about 200GB. I have had this problem in the past with my older MBP. I am never able to EJECT the external drive, I assume because Memories is scanning all my photos trying to make new memories. In the past I always had to shutdown my MBP then remove the device.

Q1) is there a way to eject the photos library external drive.

Well now that I have a new MBP with 1TB ssd, I was thinking of copying the library to its internal drive, this would therefore remove the need to eject the photos library disk.

When I try to copy the library from the external drive to the internal drive, it copies for a couple of GB and then fails for an error stating something about another file on the volume with the same name. I assume it has to do with the internal structure of the photos library.

Q2) is there a way around the same file name on volume error?

To be able to eject the drive it should suffice to log off. You system photos library will always be in use, while you are logged in.

Check the file system format of your external drive. If the file system format is not MacOS extended (Journaled), but for example MacOS extended (Journaled,case-sensitive,) copying to the system drive may result in two different files being copied to the same file., because the internal drive cannot differentiate between two filenames that only differ in the case of the letters. You could try to use cloning software to copy the library back, but you may lose the image files with the conflicting file names.
