Question: Read status not syncing between devices

when i read an email on my computer, it shows as read on the computer but shows unread on my iphone. same in reverse - ie when i read an email on my iphone, it shows as read on the iphone, but shows as unread on the computer. i each case, it remains the same problem even after updating or refreshing on the device. They say it’s bc i use POP3 protocol to retrieve my mail. how do i change the protocols

All my mail settings are default:

- on MacBook all my mail accounts are tagged as IMAP

- on my iPhone all my mail accounts are connected to generic Yahoo / Gmail servers.

Does anyone actually know what's going on? I see this question being asked everywhere, but no real answers. My emails are definitely not POP3. Why "read" status is not updated across all devices? I get all the mail across all the devices instantly, so no problem with the incoming mail. but why tf read status is not updated across all devices?

I don't know. A question for the respective providers perhaps. I have an Exchange account which works perfectly and a POP3 account that works as I expect it to, complete with the hassle of read status. You can try tearing down the various accounts and setting them up again, that often does the trick.
