Question: iTunes app on 3rd generation rev Apple TV not outputting sound

I am helping my father troubleshoot his 3rd generation rev Apple TV. The iTunes app, and only the iTunes app, has suddenly stopped outputting sound on music files. This does not happen with any other app and also does not occur when using iTunes on the iPad through airplay. It also only happens with music files. They appear to still be playing as the time counter counts down but no sound is output. The sound effects of navigating the menu still output. Does anyone have any idea how to resolve this issue?

if one set audio to surround in the settings and only have stereo connect and play normal stereo material all is well


but if one play surround material ones stereo speakers will be front left and right and most audio like conversations are played out of the center speaker which is absent
