The on-board macOS Bluetooth File Exchange in the Applications > Utilities Folder works great for moving files between my Mac's and dumb Moto Flip Phone.

If your device is not staying connected to the Mac via bluetooth? There may be another device near-by (a USB 3.0 external hard drive, a cordless phone base, an electric appliance, etc.) that is interfering with the bluetooth connection.

In addition, try moving the android device a few yards away from the Mac instead real close and make sure that android phone is fully charged or plugged into it's charger.
