Why does my iPhone 7 not fill the whole screen for certain apps

iPhone 7 is brand new and is up to date with the most recent software.

When using apps like weather, calculator., Snapchat and Facebook it doesn’t display the app using the whole screen. Instead it shrinks the app and has black screen at the top and bottom.

I have tried restarting but did nothing.
