Having a problem with MS Word for the Mac 2016 - no luck with MS Word support

Yesterday I installed the upgrade to MacOS High Sierra v. 10.13.4 (think it was before 10.12.3).

today trying to use MS Word for the Mac 2016 and I have a personal MS Word for the Mac 365 It is Version 16.12 (180410)

When I open a blank page it now comes with a horizontal dotted box at the top of the page, and anything I type goes into this box. If after typing something, I hit return, I get a blank box as a space, then another box into which anything types goes.

Have spent most of the afternoon and part of the evening, going through all the menus of MS Word for the Mac

No luck. When through the "help' on MS Word for the Mac - no luck. All it had was 'text box' and this is not text box. Contacted the help section of MS Word for the Mac and had a Support person on messaging. After more than 30 minutes I realised we were at cross purposes because he kept sending me links to MS Word for a pc and windows.

I have taken screen shots, but I can't see anyway to attach. I have used MS Word for the Mac going back years and I've never seen this horizontal dotted box. It won't copy.

iMac, macOS Sierra (10.12.3)
