Disk Utility and Indexing ?

Running Sierra on a MacBook Pro. Manage to get it to a stable condition. Then have to reboot for whatever reason - after several days of running say. Invariably fails to shutdown or restart properly - hangs. When it comes back I have lost one of the internal hard drives (an SSD), Disk Utility can't find ANY disks, and all Mail and Spotlight indexing is lost.

Go into recovery mode, Disk Utility ok, do First Aid on the drives, all ok. Then reboot - same outcome as before. Have tried PRAM reset.

How are Disk Utility and Indexing related ?

How does Disk Utility work in Recovery mode, but not in Normal mode ?

Will continue random combinations of shutdown / restart / recovery mode etc until it magically comes back - with both internal drivers present and Indexing kicked off again.

There has to be something lurking in my boot script ? That sometimes works , sometimes doesn't.........

“System modifications - There are a large number of system modifications running in the background.”

Indeed a large number. Maybe you need all that, but probably not.

There is a lot of old stuff in there that wouldn’t be supported/functional on Sierra anyway, so best to remove it thoroughly.

All of them have items listed that suggest obsolete or forgotten software: Unsigned Files, Startup Items, Third party Kernel Extensions, Launch Agents, Launch Daemons, User Launch Agents, Internet Plug-ins, User Internet Plug-ins, Audio Plug-ins, Safari Extensions, 3rd Party Preference Panes.

Do review your need for each them, and remove the ones you can live without or maybe re-install again later. “Less is more 😉 ”

As for your original question: You can force a complete re-indexing, which should give you sort of a clean slate, and that may solve existing indexing problems.
