Lost Apple Watch not showing on iCloud

A nearly completely charged Apple Watch went AWOL today, presumed lost. It is in a shock-proof rubber case so not presumed broken.

The Apple Watch is a series 2, and appears to have its Activation Lock on (as per the instructions- it has "Find my Watch" showing where expected and that option is apparently on as long as the Apple Watch was paired with an iPhone which has Find My Phone switched on- check and check).

It does not, however, show up on the iCloud Account for its second owner (the original owner sold it as he wasn't getting on with it; it was assumed to have been "de-registered), though the iPhone it is successfully paired with does show up.

It also shows up OK on the iPhone, and we can complete instructions to locate until we click on the Find my Watch link for the correct Apple Watch. Because the map displays only the online devices, and the Apple Watch also not listed under My Devices from that point on.

When asking support we were just told that it cannot show up if it is turned off. Which cannot be the case as the iCloud account is showing another (now broken) Apple Watch as "offline" as well as all manner of other "offline" devices (old phones etc) just fine. This one's just not there.

Is there anything that can be done with the info we have- the fact that we have a paired iPhone, know the serial number, have the box, believe that the Activation Lock is on etc?

Why does the Apple Watch not show up, even just as "offline" like the other devices? Why does it show up as paired and even as "findable" if not really findable?

It's a puzzle! Please help. Thank you for reading.

The Apple Watch cannot be deleted from the iCloud account, because it doesn't show up there in the first place. 😟 It only shows up as findable in the paired iPhone as per the instructions but as soon as you click on "Find my Phone" there is no further mention of it, at all.

That ^ is the entire problem. If it did, as we are lead to believe it should- no problem. It really is a weird case...

Not sure why an answer has been apparently marked as "solved" by someone other than myself, but the Apple Watch does not show under My Devices, was found near a known (to it) WiFi network and was, and still is not findable.

There is something else amiss and that is really what I'd like to address. I guess it is a case of:

  1. Why does the Apple Watch not show under My Devices (when another one, a Series 1, does)?
  2. Why was it not "findable" despite being on and near the WiFi connection it "knows"?
  3. How does one resolve this, to avoid a possible repeat? Unpair and re-pair?

Lessons learnt- support cannot answer all questions, no matter how well asked and some things will remain mysteries.

Yes, that explains why it is not on the map (it cannot be). 🙂

But that doesn't explain why it is not listed under My Devices, even if just as offline. It should be there, even if out of range.

So what does one do, given that it is NOT on the list, though it should be?

Then also- if the Activation Lock is on (and it is on, according to the info Apple supply) then it should work as Apple suggest it would. Not that the last point matters an awful lot, but it would be nice to think that if someone has acquired it, they cannot use it. Of course- that is just a pipe dream as support suggested that they can use it. Meh.

I would have hoped for at least the last known location, ideally marked as stale. You could try computer/ web browser access rather than the phone app, and see if it has retained the location.

If Activation Lock was successfully activated it should be impossible to work around or remove it without the linked iCloud password. Don’t delete it from the current iCloud account because that will release AL. But you might be able to request Lost Mode and have it lock completely if a finder ever takes it near a familiar WiFi.
