AirPods cause echo with person I am talking to

I've used my AirPods for over a year with no problem like this, but in the last month people are telling me that they can hear themselves echoing on the phone call when I am using my AirPods. If I readjust the mic to point more toward my mouth it sometimes helps a bit. It does it whether or not I am using one or two AirPods. If I switch to just iPhone or speaker phone the echo problem goes away. I have tried forgetting the device and repairing it, but same echo problem exists.

Has anyone else had this problem?
