Sky Q Router and iPhone 8+/iPhone X Dropping Connection

So, since getting the iPhone 8+ back in October I've had an annoying issue with Wi-Fi connection to my Sky Q box where it would drop the connection but still show full bars. All you had to do was knock Wi-Fi off and back on and it would reconnect so i dealt with it especially as my wife's 6s appeared to be fine.

Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago i decided to upgrade both phones to iPhone X's and now we both have the same problem.

We have the Sky Q Router, the main TV box and 2 Hubs. Sky seems to think the issue is with the way the hardware is 'meshed' because of an issue with the way Apple have set things up and it would be a relatively easy fix for them as. When the phone tries to connect to a stronger signal it fails.

I've been looking round and apparently these routers frequencies are meshed (2.4ghz and 5gh's) and if you unmesh them and rename the 2.4ghz SSID and connect only to that it a more stable connection which i have done and it is, but its still not perfect.

Was wondering if anyone know if Apple are on this or if there's a better fix/workaround?

I've done it the other way around and connected both iPhones to the 2.4ghz which has in large worked around the issue. I've left the SSID on the 5ghz unchanged because all other devices have no issues so they can remain there. I've renamed the other '*******_2.4' and am using it exclusively for the 2 iPhone X's i'm having the issues with.

Can’t comment regarding the “meshing” side of things, but have you tried connecting to the 5Ghz wireless section instead of the 2.4

I run a standard router and issues regarding connection have mainly been to do with interference from adjacent networks, so either changing channels (1, 6 or 11) on the 2.4Ghz wireless or (better still) moving over on to the 5Ghz section has normally resolved. I’m lucky because at the moment very few neighbours have 5Ghz so this band is not over crowded, plus it gives the highest throughput if transferring files over the network to attached storage.

The other thing you can do is name the 2.4 and 5GHz wireless sections with unique SSID’s, because if they are the same some devices can get confused and drop connection, it also helps when trying to see which one your device has decided to uses. I use the standard SSID name and append either -2G or -5G.

Saying the above though doesn’t explain why you had no issues from iPhone 6s.

That’s fine and if all is now working it might be good to leave well alone, but if the issue was to do with interference from an external source changing wireless bands is the best way to go, what effects 2.4 usually doesn’t 5Ghz (or the reverse).

The problem trying to move to one is not all devices will work if legacy, so iPhones are ok to use 5Ghz but your printer might not for example, my Canon and PlayStation still need 2.4Ghz.

Sorry can’t give advice on “mesh”, even had a quick look on the net but still not much help.
