I have an apple tv 3rd gen and want to watch movies from itunes library without having to have a computer open or on. I was thinking about getting a LaCie Fuel to store my itunes library on. Does anyone know it this will work?

I want to watch my itunes purchases on my apple tv 3rd gen without having to have a computer on/itunes open. I want to store them on possibly a LaCie Fuel (not purchased yet). Is this possible and/or what else is needed to do this. I don't really want to convert all the files and purchase software to convert or any thing. I don't mind getting an app or two if that is what it takes. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Jeremy

I have ipad mini, apple TV gen 3, iphone SE, and a dell desktop.

1. The Apple TV has no way of directly accessing a wireless drive.

2. It could potentially work by accessing the LaCie from the iPad or iPhone with the drive's own App (if it has one) or another 3rd party app and airplaying the content to the Apple TV.

However, DRM protected content like movies bought from the iTunes store, would not play outside of iTunes or the TV App on the iPad or iPhone and the TV App would not be able to directly access the drive.

If bought from iTunes it may be easier to just stream the movies directly to the Apple TV from the iTunes Store.

3. It seems like a lot of work just to keep a computer turned off.

If anything, the easier thing to do, might be to get a cheap media center pc that uses little power and can be turned on and used to access the movies from. You can use an external hard drive to store the movies.

Ok thanks. I might try one of the links you sent about building a cheap media server. I really like the raspberry pi and have made several game consoles with them. I might try my luck at getting itunes on one and using the lacie to store the media. I think this might work. If itunes is running on a computer accessing the stored media then it all should work protected or not right?

Yes. It should work. With iTunes running, the Apple TV can connect to that iTunes library and get the media and playback all content including protected content.

Thanks for all the input. The LaCie does create its own wifi, which means I have to go into settings on the apple tv and set the wifi connection to the lacie in order for it read it. I have read other articles and videos showing this. I guess I am just wanting confirmation that it can work before I spend $99 on the lacie. My computer ***** and my internet is to slow to stream from itunes store. My ipad is only 64 gb and I don't want to store them there. I have more movies than it will hold. They say the lacie works perfectly with itunes and generates it own network. In a perfect world, I would like to just go without my desktop altogether. I don't need it. I can do everything I need on my ipad and phone.

I am confused! You are saying no, not with some content (which i don't understand) and Phil0124 is saying yes with an app I can.

So lets forget about converting DRM protection and focus on an app on ipad that will read wifi drive with itunes library and airplay to apple tv or use the hdmi cable from apple that connects lightning cable to tv. All i want to do is not store them on my computer or ipad and be able to play them in the car or a hotel. thoughts?

Phil is likely overlooking my previous point that iTunes can read many more formats than the iPad can.

You may have formats in your iTunes library that the iPad can't read regardless of them being protected or not, if you copy them to this drive you are interested in, iTunes will be able to play them but your iPad won't.

Why not it is the same format that is purchased thru itunes in the first place. Playing on the ipad should be the same right? I am confused and give up. It feels as if we are going in circles. I get hopes that it will work and then it gets shot down again by the same person that gave me hope. So I guess i will just forget it and do something else.

Thanks again for helping me out.

So what is my option then to achieve my goal of storing and watching itunes purchases on my tv or ipad without having them stored locally on the device or stream from a computer or internet. I don't have space on my ipad and I don't want to use my slow worthless computer and I can't stream them from itunes store because it tells me it will take 10 hrs or so to be ready. Thoughts before I give up on the idea?

Thanks for continuing to work with me. Do you think the kangaroo mobile desktop computer paired with the Lacie and apple tv would be a good setup? I like the fact that the kangaroo will attach to a ipad and use it as a screen. Thoughts? However it is about $250, which is weird, the link you provided said 5 pc for under $100 and it was the first on the list. I guess 2 years makes a big difference.
