Reciever advice to Apple TV 4K

Hi,

The family have just upgraded the 4th generation Apple TV to the 4K-version.

We have a 4K TV (Samsung UE75KS8005), but - as it turns out, the current reciever (Yamaha RX-A830) can't handle this in a good way since it only have HDMI 1.4 etc., so we need to upgrade.

Now, I have read that the reciever for example need to handle HDCP 2.2... Also, perhaps HDMI 2.0 - or, does it have to be HDMI 2.0a, even?

Our candidate is Yamaha RX-V683:

I would be incredibly thankful if someone could verify if the technical features is enough to take advantage of all of the features for Apple TV 4K (handshake, HDR, playback, maximum bitrate etc.)?

Maybe even point out exacly what I need to look for to make this combo work flawlessly...

Thanks,

Sean

Yamaha explicitly lists HDR (HDR10, Dolby Vision, HLG) over their four top tier HDMI ports. I think those ports have to be (at least) HDMI 2.0a. HLG (a type of HDR for broadcast tv) is even part of the HDMI 2.0b specification.

The HDMI Licensing body has asked (demanded) that manufacturers (and even tech writers) do not mention HDMI version numbering, as versioning is not all inclusive, and ports and cables may have different requirements, and that may confuse people. That is why it is so hard to get the specs, and why it is even more confusing with nonsense words as “premium high speed” (which actually is a certification).

So, I can just verify now, that everything is working flawlessly with our newly purchased RX-V683 from Yamaha. All features works exactly as they should, and the family can enjoy 4K as it's supposed to be experienced.

One of the upsides is that, now we only need to use the Siri Remote to navigate most content. We don't even touch the TV or reciever remote. When we start/shut down the Apple TV, the TV and the received now switch on/off simultaneously, thanks to ARC.

Thanks again for the help. I appreciate it a lot!

Best regards,

Sean + family

Right now, I'm balancing between two models:

RX-V683:

https://usa.yamaha.com/products/audio_visual/av_receivers_amps/rx-v683_u/specs.h tml#product-tabs

Which obviously handles both HDCP 2.2, but only HDMI 2.2.

The bigger, bader and much more expensive choice is:

RX-A870:

https://usa.yamaha.com/products/audio_visual/av_receivers_amps/rx-a870_u/specs.h tml#product-tabs

Which not only handle everything V683 can, but also HDMI 2.2a.

Since the A870 is MUCH more pricy, I'd really like to know if I make a mistake with not buying a product which gives full support for HDMI 2.2a.

And to add - I have the RX-A830 today and I adore it - but it wasn't as pricy as A870 is today. ➕

The devil is in the details...

Hi again,

You are correct. It annoys me that I cannot edit published posts. Otherwise I would have corrected that. In my last post, I obviously wrote HDMI 2.2, while I meant HDMI 2.0.

Other than that, I believe this case can be closed. I'll place an order for the RX-V683 today. I'll get back here with a last update on whether it worked or not.

Thanks again for your help!
