How do I see directories above what is shown in Finder?
How do I see the parent directories of the directories shown in the left pane of Finder?

Click the icon in the sidebar to navigate to that folder. The title of the window will change to that icon and name and the window will populate with that folder's contents. Hold down the command key and click on the name in the window titlebar. You will get a pop-up menu and you can go down one to the parent directory.
