How can I get my MacBookPro to send messages?

One answer looked promising, but nowhere can I find "Network Monitor" or "IMimagetransfer".

The instructions on how to correct the issue were really straight forward until it came to those two terms.

MacBook Pro, iOS 10.3.3

Hi,

Network Monitor is in Applications/Utilities

However Activity Monitor in the same Folder is a better app for seeing if the process fires up when trying to Send.

IMTransferAgent should be the item you are looking for.

This shows it allowed in Little Snitch.

Little Snitch is a Firewall app that tell you when an app is making incoming or outgoing connections (if you have not set them up to be allowed)

It has to be allowed separately from Messages because the app does not see it as part of Messages. (the Mac Firewall does know and it is Allowed if Messages is allowed).

There are similar apps to Little Snitch that are Firewall app with reporting help.

In Sierra it is in:-

Where: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/IMTransferServices.framework/IMTransferAgent. app/Contents/MacOS/IMTransferAgent

In High Sierra the it is the same.

As they are in the same place it is strange why some people say it does not work.

However I don't have an issue so a poor Update could be missing parts of the IMTransferServices.framwork folder and/or contents.

If the Activity Monitor does not shoe the process starting then the Process in the above location may not exist.

Hi,

I tend to work in Sierra most of the time and went and Checked and there it is:-

Then I checked High Sierra and it is not included any longer.

Having said that it is not the app you are looking for.

You should be using Activity Monitor.

You should select the PID column and make the high Number appear at the top.

As you recently started Activity Monitor it will be one of the top if not the top item.

Sending a Picture or File will make IMTansferAgent appear very briefly at the top:-

As you can see by this Screen grab I managed to get it before the CPU details had filled in.

It will only show for the time it is in use - the time it takes to Send the the File/Picture.

Double Clicking an Executable file will try yo launch it but on the whole nothing will happen.

I am not surprised at the results you got.

It is not really telling you if the process works properly or not.

Hi Ralph,

First off, thank-you for the answer, greatly appreciated.

Network Monitor is not in Applications/Utilities, the apps in the Utility section go from Migration Assistant to Script Editor. Nor is Little Snitch on the laptop.

I tried this on two separate WiFi networks, networks separated by 16 miles, or 25 kilometers. Same thing, can't text anyone a photo or video.

When I dbl click on IMTransferAgent I get this;

Last login: Sun May 6 10:35:19 on ttys000

Polar-Express:~ Andrew$ /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/IMTransferServices.framework/IMTransferAgent. app/Contents/MacOS/IMTransferAgent ; exit;

logout

Saving session...

...completed.
