One possibility is a corrupted boot volume, where it's getting stuck because there's some critical OS file that's missing. I've heard of it possibly stalling indefinitely, shutting down (that happened to me), or restarting. It's almost always at the same point on the progress bar.
Running First Aid from an external boot drive (if you've got one) or from Recovery HD or Internet Recovery might fix the problem, but isn't guaranteed to.

Do you have a backup? Worst case scenario is that everything is unrecoverable and the only practical thing to do is reformat the drive and start over with a clean OS install. Also - what model MacBook Pro?
cd /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/var/db/caches/opendirectorymv ./mbr_cache ./mbr_cache-oldDoes your charger show green or amber—this would indicate you have power. If nothing is indicated at the magsafe light, the battery is dead and no AC from the power brick.
If that is the case then the best you can do is take it in:

early or late 2011? which model MacBook pro from 2011? 13-in, 15-in single graphics, 15-in with Dual Graphics?
It will not start up using any of the keys you can hold down. It always stalls at this point. I believe that it is a 2011 with all the newest software installed. I purchased it in Nov. 2010. All I did was try to restart it. ???
Thanks! I just spoke with Apple support. I tried cmd-r and opt-cmd-r as well as shift and cmd-opt-p-r. Nothing will get it past the apple logo screen. I have an appt tomorrow at a store.
It is 13”
The charger is green.
