There is a small hole on the iPhone X lens

A physical hole? In the lens itself or nearby? If I remember there are several other things mounted around the lenses, including a microphone which would look like a small hole

Digging really deep in my memory, that mic is the one which captures sound when you record a video. Seems logical to put it near the lens...

It also serves as a noise cancelling microphone when on a call.
