Battery Cover is Stuck on Magic Mouse

I have a Magic Mouse with the removable batteries and black button and I have a big problem. My batteries need to be changed but I can't get the cover to come off the mouse. I pull the black button down and in (as I have many times before) but the cover stays attached to the mouse. It does not pop up me to remove it. I have not been able to pry it off either as there's not enough room around the edges of the door to wedge something under it to remove it. Can anyone suggest a way that I can get the cover off the mouse so I can replace the battery?

MacBook Pro, macOS High Sierra (10.13.4), 16 Gb RAM, 1 Tb hard drive

I have followed the hints, but have had no luck. I've had the mouse for several years. The black button goes down and back and I hear a click, but the metal cover will not pop off the mouse. I don't know if something is broken on the inside or if something is just stuck. I will try cleaning everything if I can find a way to get the battery cover off the mouse.

Do you have any other ideas I could try?

Hello David,

If I had I would have included them in the user tip. I know it can be tricky and you do need patience. I suppose it is a case of how closely they are fitted. It is possible that the batteries have leaked and added residue to the underside.

If you've not had trouble before, this could explain it. It did cross my mind that you may have access to a powerful magnet (away from your computer !!!).
