disappearing software in High Sierra

Hi all,

Something really strange has been happening for a few weeks. Software I have installed has been disappearing.

It all started with VLC. I've had it for years and a couple of weeks ago, it wasn't there anymore. Had to re-install it. I thought that, maybe, I had messed up. A few days ago, it was all my office suit who vanished, but it was even weirder. Word icon was in the dock, but with a ? on it.

Yesterday, dropbox app was gone... (but folder was still there. the same can't be said about VLC and Word) It doesn't make sense. Any idea on what it ca be? I have to clean install everything (even OS) but can only do it next week after finishing a job.

Anyone with the same issue?

Maybe the problem is with old 32bit apps? If so, why vanishing now instead of two OS installs ago?

May 17, 2018 4:19 AM in response to sinetype

No, the problem is not 32-bit applications.

You have several issues that I can see from the report.

1) Your disk space is running dangerously low.

Your mac needs space on the system drive for caches, virtual memory and other things.

12GB is not even enough for storing a sleepimage.

Try to always have at least 15% to 20% free space on your system drive.

2) You have several old installations of software, that are not or may not be compatible with High Sierra.

2a) Paragon is too old. It is used to access NTFS formatted drives with read-write capabilities, but your version is incompatible.

2b) You should uninstall sophos. Antivirus on the mac do not protect you and can cause many issues.

3b) You have kernel extensions that were made targetting 10.9. They may or may not work correctly in the current version

3d) CCC is a fine tool, but you seem to have a version that predates APFS. You should update this.

Thank You Luis,

I had 14gb more yesterday, before I downloaded a new image of High Sierra and some other software (in order to do a clean install).

The whole thing is bizarre, but I'll do a clean install next week and hopefully, things should be resolved. Also, it will be the right moment to remove bootcamp and get 60gb more.

Thank you once again, Luis
