Earphone sound distorting with music, but not videos

So I've been having this issue for the last few weeks when I listen to music or podcasts with my earphones where the sound distorts (it sounds like CD's when they get stuck). However, this doesn't happen when I watch videos with my earphones. Could it be a software issue?
