Anti virus program recommendation ?

I've done some searches about anti virus but not getting a definitive answer...

Mac pro.. 2007 running 8 something ( I think...sitting in hiatus) and a and a i-mac 2009 running 10.11.1

I have had a couple macs since 2008, was always said they don't get infected, so I've never prescribed to a anti type of program.

Lately it seams there is more talk about more threats to macs.. should one now days get a program and if so which do you suggest...

Been looking at bitdefender or total AV ???

I would not recommend any AV software. They generally do more harm than good.

I do agree with ckuan that Malwarebytes can be useful. However, I only download it as necessary (maybe once a year or so). I don't have it do any kind of regular scanning.

maybe unrelated but not so much after reading the link.....

I installed mac keeper years ago. the license for it has since run out and after reading it seams like it should not be installed.... would you recommend downloading something to completely illuminate it, or let sleeping dogs lie?

MacKeeper is one of the worst pieces of software you can install on a Mac. It only causes problem while resolving none.

To be sure that all of the crud it has installed on your system, try http://osxdaily.com/uninstall-mackeeper-from-mac/

Negative..

But actually moving the app to the trash is what I did, as in the video, which is as in the uninstall directions.

a couple other items showed up in the search but not as many in the video..

did another search in finder an no mention of MacKeeper.... maybe it's all gone??

I don't know if it is all gone (I've never installed it and won't so I cannot test) - the official instructions tell you to hit the "uninstall" button which, I assume, would get rid of any leftovers.
