Reinstalling Safari from Time Machine

Safari has developed a bug of some sort and is not working on my MacBook Pro running OS 10.9.5. How can I reinstall from a Time Machine back up?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Usually reinstalling an app is not the answer because the issue is usually in related files rather than the app itself.

Try these steps first:

Force Quit Safari ( command + option + esc keys). Then restart Safari holding the Shift key.

Turn off Safari extensions in Safari > Preferences > Extensions > un-checkmark all extensions.

Empty Caches. You can either choose Safari menu > Clear History Or, if you do not want to remove History go to Safari menu > Preferences > Advanced and check the “Show Develop Menu” in Menubar. Then, on that menu > “Empty Caches”.

See these Apple Support Topics for detailed advice:

If Safari is slow, stops responding, quits unexpectedly, or has other issues - Apple Support

If Safari doesn't load a page or webpage items are missing - Apple Support

Safari for Mac: If Safari can’t open a website

If you still think you need to reinstall Safari from TM, then in Finder choose Safari in your Applications folder. Then enter Time Machine and choose Restore.

Would you provide more information about what isn't working? Can't access any web site? Can't access some?

In addition to the above, try Safari/History/Show History and delete all history items. Quit/reopen Safari and test. You can also try Safari/Clear History…. The down side is it clears all cookies. Doing this may cause some sites to no longer recognize your computer as one that has visited the web site. Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db and move it to the trash.

If that doesn't work, try running this program in your normal user account , then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy Report” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.
