I'm trying to use my mid 2011 iMac as an external monitor for my 2017 MacBook Pro. The support page is saying I should use a thunderbolt cable but the iMac doesn't have this output. Do I need thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter as well as the thunderbolt cable?

Yup' a > Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter - Apple and a Thunderbolt 2 cable to plug into the iMac.
Is your mid 2011 iMac a 21.5" or a 27"
Thanks for this reply. I purchased that adapter along with a Thunderbolt 2 cable to connect the two computers. However when hitting command + F2 doesn't do anything. I've followed all the instructions on this page but it's not working for some reason - Use your iMac as a display with Target Display Mode - Apple Support

Bradely, I just wanted to give you a quick forum tip. Within 15 minutes of making a post, you can edit it. Click on the drop down arrow to the right of the "Helpful" button.
If you want to keep making separate posts, that's entirely up to you, of course. But, people don't always know that option is there.

You may have to add the fn key to the mix to make that key a F2 in the first place. Remember they are dual purpose.
I have a mid 2011 iMac 27". Yes, I've tried selecting and unselecting the "use F2 F2" setting. . Both don't seem to work.
