"esc" button no longer working to exit full screen

I used to be able to simply press the "esc" button to exit full screen. That stopped working all of a sudden. How do I reactivate this?

MacBook Pro, iOS 11.3.1

Similar questions

Minimize and close out buttons disappear in full screen mode I was following this discussion and it is old so would not let me reply without restarting it. I discovered that if you double click where the menu bar should be it will flash the menu bar up and then you can select View and remove the check by enter full screen. Looks like the shortcut to get back to actual size is Command 0 or O. I will try that next time. I am hoping I can find this post when it happens to me again and I forget what I did to get back. LOL

ESC key doesn't show anymore in Touch Bar ESC key doesn't show anymore in Touch Bar, instead a cross button replaces at that location but it does not function as the ESC key. For instance, if I want to force close an application, I used to use Command+option+ESC to bring up the list of opened applications. It does not work anymore. This is very annoying, please help to provide solution to resolve this. Thanks.

Missing Escape Touch Bar Button My touch-bar no longer displays the "ESC" button when I am viewing something fullscreen. Where'd it go? (Started happening 1-2wk ago). I also have read I can make a physical key act as the escape button, but my touch-bar is meant to have the "Esc" button so I'd like it back :-)

Reset SMC. Choose the method for “If the battery is non-removable”.
