updating OS in issue sequence or skip?

Should 17 updates (includes combo, supplemental, and security) to OS High Sierra from 10.12.6 be done sequentially (updating to 10.13.4 [most recent]) or does the most recent update contain all necessary data from all 17 previous updates?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)
