Question: Mac mini OS

My good old Mac mini 3,1 still runs on MacOS X 10.6.8. Question: Is it possible to install a newer OS on it? If yes: Which one? And how do I get it?

You can install up to 10.11 El Capitan and a few in-between versions such as 10.7 Lion and 10.8 Mountain Lion.

El Capitan is free, and can be obtained from the Mac App Store directly:

For Lion and Mountain Lion, you would need to by the download code for $19.99 for either one, and get it from the app Store as well if you really wanted to.

Buy OS X Lion (10.7) - Apple

Buy OS X Mountain Lion (10.8) - Apple

If you have not done so, and your Mac Mini still only has 1 or 2GB of RAM it would be highly recommended to upgrade its ram to at least 4GB. Though it can take a maximum of 8GB.
