You got them for free with your iPhone and if you purchased some they were only $29.95. That is not by any means costly and they are pretty low order earbuds.

But they are covered under your warranty for one year. Before you exchange them check the Lightning connector on your iPhone and use a toothpick and carefully clean any detritus that you find and see if that fixes it. Also, do not leave your headphones plugged i and then wrap them around your iPhone.

And there is no "problem" that has occurred for many years.

I saw many complaints going back several years on two websites including the apple support community. This is not a new issue. I used four wireless earbuds that all failed under warranty and then failed again after the warranties ran out. I treated them gently. I started using the wired Apple EarPods after that. My EarPods are out of warranty. I am not going to pay $29.00 or the reduced price of $18.00 for earbuds that go bad after only a few months of use. I used the wired EarPods one to three hours a day most days. I always removed them from my iPhone and ears after use, and stored them in an unfolded position on my bedroom dresser, ready for next day's use. I always treated them gently.

It is my understanding the problem is caused by separation of wires on the wired EarPods near the connection to the iPhone.

This is a defect that Apple has ignored.

Therefore, I will only spend only $5.00 on non-Apple wired EarPods, until I find a good one.

I never use mine (with one notable exception, the ones that came with the shuffle with no buttons) but I have given them away to people. Most are still using the ones I gave them. Yes, for all headphones ever made if the wires separate they won't work. I had some Ultimate Ears IEMs do this. There are probably a billion of the Apple earbuds out there (don't forget they changed design with the EarPods) and the number of people complaining about them is minuscule compared to that number. It isn't a defect that Apple has ignored. But do yourself a favor and buy better headphones. You will be surprised at the difference in sound.

I have bought better EarPods. They all failed. I have an earphone with great sound, but it is too bulky for some exercises I do, and I have to tie it to my head. I prefer something light. I am unaware the basic wired Apple EarPods that come with the the iPhone have changed, and I am not going to spend $18.00 to find out. The problem with its wiring is well documented to have occurred over many years. Most people in my gym do not use it. When I used it, I was satisfied with the sound because it fit my ears better and did not fall out like my wireless EarPods that did not fit well.

I didn't say buy better EarPods. I said buy better earphones or IEMs if you do not like them. There are many out there.

So you bought the Apple AirPods and they did not fit your ears? I like their fit better than EarPods. I'm not sure which gym you go to but I see lots of the white Apple IEMs. And no, it is not a "well-documented" wiring problem.

Again, buy something else.
