Macbook pro (mid 2014) display works only with external display

When I turn my macbook pro on, I get the loading screen with the apple logo

and im able to sign in until a couple seconds later the screen turns black. Only way around is to connect an external display and after that the display on my macbook works. Dont know why this is happening and it’s annoying.

Sounds like a hardware failure, GPU, LCD, cable or cable connection.

If you shine a bright light through the back of the screen through the  logo—do you see on screen content? This would be telling.

In or out of warranty you can get a free over the counter 'Apple Service Diagnostics' test and ask specifically for the VST (Video Systems Test)
