LG Ultrawide monitor and MBA (mid-2012)

Hi,

My mother bought me an LG ultrawide monitor 29WK500/50s as a gift so I tried to connect it to my MacBook Air 13-inch (mid-2012) through an HDMI cable (because the monitor only has 2 HDMI ports and nothing else).

It works but the screen is stretched so badly and the aspect ratio is terrible.

The monitor claims that it can go up to 2560x1080, but my MacBook Air does not.

I tried every common solution: I tried holding the option key to show more displays, none of them work out.

I tried using SwitchResX and that also did not work out.

I replaced the HDMI cables and they all gave me the same results.

My Mac is updated to High Sierra 10.13.4

Please is there anything else I can try? I absolutely cannot return the gift to my mother and I do not know where she got it from.

Hi there, HtotheE!
Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities! It sounds like you are having issues with your MacBook Air and the screen resolution with an external monitor and I am happy to help out! First, take a look at this article with steps to follow to Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac. This will perform checks and stop certain software from starting up automatically. Once you are in safe mode, check to see if the issue is still happening.
Also, check out this article with steps for How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac to create a new user and test the issue in the new account to see if the issue is user specific or system wide.
You should also check out this article for How to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac as well as this article for How to reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac - Apple Support.
Let me know the results and have a great day!
