McAfee wants me to reinstall OS High Sierra.

I just installed McAfee. It found a couple of "Spyware" links - the same ones for three days. When I tried a full scan, it didn't stop - millions of items searched and 160 "threats". It was in my backup at this time. Help from McAfee was long and sketchy. Their product would not install properly. They tried a "Trial" product to no avail. Their "Solution" is to have me reinstall the Mac operating system. Yikes! What to do? Is there a solution? I am hearing mixed messages about whether or not virus protection for a Mac is even necessary. Help. I am a long term Mac user and have six Apple devices.

iMac, OS High Sierra 10.13.2

Any software developer that suggests you reinstall the Operating System in order to fix their problem should be banned from your Mac. That goes for any software, AV crap or not.

If you allowed McAfee to "clean" your Mac of those threats, you may have to reinstall the OS.
