Iphone 6 with no passcode stolen. Can the thief access?

I lost my iPhone 6. Unfortunately it didn't have a passcode. I have 'erased the iPhone' however, it's pending because my iPhone is still switched off. I guess it will only be erased when the iPhone is connected to the internet. I'd like to know -

1) If the thief can still access my data (photos mainly). I have remotely deleted all the apps though.

2) If my iphone is offline, does it mean my phone is switched off or is it in airplane mode (not connected to data/internet). Which means the thief can still access my photos and messages?

3) Does erasing my iPhone take time once it's connected to internet?
