Can't upload custom tones to iPhone 8

I lost all of the custom ringtones I made previously, and had used for ages on my previous iPhones. Today I finally resolved the issue by re-importing the ringtones into garage band and then exporting to iTunes - from there I dragged the new tone from the iTunes Media - Import folder back into the Tones folder on my phone. If you need help with garage band this site was really useful.

I've added custom ringtones to my iPhones in the past, it can be a bit fussy but it eventually works. I know there are Apple postings that say to drag and drop (or copy and paste) the ringtones into the sidebar on the iPhone's Tones folder (in iTunes). But that simply doesn't work. Won't copy. Nothing happens If I try to copy or paste into the main Tones window, I get the error message "XXX was not copied to the iPhone because it cannot be played on this iPhone". How can I copy the ringtones into the Tones folder for the iPhone when the normal way just doesn't work? Or what am I doing wrong? Thanks.

How to add custom ringtones to iPhone 8 using iTunes? I am trying to add a custom ringtone that I made to my iPhone 8. I have already made an M4R version of the file by using iTunes to convert to AAC, then renaming to M4R. I can add the MP3 version to my library but not the M4R version. I have tried the steps shown on Apple Support but they do not work (copying and pasting the M4R to my phone in the left sidebar). Moreover, when I look at the "tones" section under my device it says "No tones", but on the device itself the tones show up (except the new tone I am trying to add). I'm about ready to put this phone through a wall. It seems like Apple is making it harder and harder to perform what should be a simple task. I did not have to jump through these hoops to put the other custom ringtones on this phone a long time ago. Any suggestions?

Custom Ringtones I can't add Custom Ringtones to iPhone Tones. Tried drag-drop, copy-paste in iTunes, but nothing seems to work. The tones are in m4a format. Copy-Paste and Drag-Drop adds the audio file to Music and not Tones. Could anyone suggest.
