Accessing a previous numbers file

I'm trying to access a numbers file I've been using for years and now getting this error message when I try & open it:

"Numbers couldn’t read the file. You can try restoring to a previous version." - previous versions are all blank. Any suggestions to access again??

iOS 11.3.1, Numbers 5.0.1

Are you sure you are using the latest version of Numbers to open the document? You may also have an old version of Numbers on your Mac and are inadvertently using it to try to open the document. To verify what version you are using go to Numbers > About Numbers in your menu.
