I can use my audio units (Waves, etc) in effects on a track. I can see that my audio units are verified in the manager, but how do I actually launch them? Can't find them in software instrument track and they're not in audio. This should be a lot more apparent. Thanks!

I'm not sure I'm following the question. You add these in your track stack and then make sure the power button icon is on not off and it should be working fine. You don't so much launch them as just put them in the stack and maybe adjust some parameters based on what the plugin does. Please help clarify.
They should be available using the Instrument slot on a Software Instrument track.
