why does email dely several minutes before displaying messages?

I'm using MacBookPro Hi Sierra 10.13.4 & Mail Version 11.3 (3445.6.18). When the mail is downloading, the text of the mail does not display – often for several minutes. It is the new split-screen mail system and is very frustrating. Eventually it does appear and can be read and used. Could it be that I also have an anti-virus program?
