iMac will not run at normal speed

When I boot up the iMac, it takes 5 minutes to fully load files and applications. Each selection or operation takes 5-10 minutes to complete or freezes up completely. Is this the fusion hard drive failing? If so, can they be replaced by me or is it a shop repair? I do not have the ability to back up the existing files.
