My friend gave me a second hand phone and I was setting it up only to find that it has an activation lock. I asked the friend what email they had connected to this phone and they don't know so I'm unable to set the phone up. I don't have money so I can't buy myself a new phone and nobody else has a spare phone I can borrow so that's out of the question. I've tried recovery mode and that hasn't worked for me either.

If the Apple ID it’s locked to is your friend’s, tell that person to use Apple's iForgot service or contact their Account Security team.

If she has the original purchase receipt, proving she is the original owner of the phone, she can take that along with the receipt to an Apple Store and they will reset the phone. If she doesn't have the original purchase receipt, she can't.
I don't think the email she used is still used as her Apple ID
