Mail won't open

For some while Mail wouldn't open in the dock. now it won't open at all.

Please advise on how best to get it to function.

MacBook Air, iOS 10.2, 10.12.6

I can't access Mail I suddenly can't access Mail. When trying to open it either from launchpad or from my dock, I get "The last time you opened Mail, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again?" If I click "Don't reopen" I get nothing, if I click "Reopen" I get "Mail quit unexpectedly" Have tried rebooting but no help. What to do????

Will Mail open from Dock if you hold the Shift key down and launch Mail?

Will Mail open from Applications folder?

Finder > Applications > Mail
