iMessage that I chose not to send staying on top of list

Hi I have an issue with my iMessage on my Macbook Pro: If I click into the typing box within a message thread but then decide I don't want to send a new message then this thread stays at the top of my messages list. So when I have a few of those cluttering up the top spaces I have to start scrolling down to get to my actual most current messages. It's acting in a way to keep those threads that were not replied to at the top of the list which is very annoying. Any suggestions gratefully received. Thanks in advance.
